Lehighton considers fair school funding resolution

Lehighton has been asked to join other municipalities to pass a resolution for Fair School Funding.

David Wargo, of Summit Hill, asked borough council on Monday to pass a resolution that would help fund area school districts.

Wargo said the Pennsylvania Constitution requires the Legislature to provide equitable and fair funding for all schools in the commonwealth to support the public education system.

“We have a fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers,” Wargo said. “I contend the state legislature’s not doing their job.”

Wargo, a Summit Hill borough councilman, noted that Summit Hill passed the Fair Funding resolution.

He said Panther Valley School District has been underfunded by about $10.5 million, and all other school districts in the state are underfunded as well because the state isn’t applying the fair funding formula fully as per state laws.

“I ask you to stand with us, pass this resolution,” Wargo said. “If we don’t do this, eventually we’ll all be in the same sentiment.”

Wargo said that as of Monday night, 10 municipalities in Carbon County and one in Schuylkill County have passed resolutions.
