Mahoning Twp. moves forward with Penn Medical site

Mahoning Township supervisors voted Wednesday to move forward with a settlement on the former Penn Medical building on Route 443 just west of Normal Square.

Once renovation work is complete, the Mahoning Township Police will use the lower level, and the township offices will be located on the second floor.

The purchase price of the property that includes the two-story building, as well as 14 acres of land, is $375,000. The property was assessed at $595,000.

Seitz Environmental Services completed drilling Thursday morning at the building, located at 2175 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive W., according to Supervisor Myron Zeke Blahy.

“As far as the mold issues go, they were not in every room,” Blahy said. “Seitz just finished drilling seven holes, and out of those seven, they only found two that had a little moisture on the back of the bottom sill, and that’s most likely from the gutters being clogged up.

“It’s not in every room.”

A motion was made and approved for township solicitor Thomas Nanovic to begin the settlement process, contacting Carbon Search and Settlement as well as Mauch Chunk Trust Co., which will be providing the mortgage.

Blahy said that the settlement for the building is tentatively scheduled for July 30.

Supervisors have been looking at the building since last fall, which once housed the offices for Dr. Floriel Diaz.

The plan is to renovate the building and move the township offices and police department to the location.
