Man charged after fleeing officers following traffic stop

A Lehighton man with an outstanding warrant now faces charges after he fled officers following a traffic stop.

State Police at Lehighton barracks reported at 9:21 p.m. June 18, they saw a white Ford F-250 pickup on Route 209 near Route 443 in Franklin Township. The vehicle’s registration plate and third brake light were not illuminated.

William Stanley, 40, was driving and a woman was the front-seat passenger.

A check of the vehicle revealed that the registered owner, NS Paving & Landscaping, Nelson Richard Stanley, was suspended.

Police stopped the truck and said Stanley appeared nervous and shaky, as well as tired and drowsy. His eyes were red, bloodshot and glassy, and his speech was slow, low and raspy.

Police found out his license was suspended, and he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for grand larceny out of New York.

Stanley failed field sobriety tests.

Stanley began to resist and pull away, then began to run from police.

Stanley ran into traffic on 209 northbound, and then jumped the metal barrier into the southbound lane of 209, where he was taken into custody and later secured in a patrol vehicle.

While police were chasing Stanley, the woman fled from the scene.

Stanley told police he ran because he didn’t want to go back to jail.

Stanley faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol/controlled substance; resisting arrest/other law enforcement; flight to avoid apprehension/trial/punishment; no rear lights; driving while operating privilege suspended or revoked; and careless driving.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail, and waived charges for court before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
