Polk fields free fishing day questions
Monday’s Polk Township supervisors meeting opened with a public comment discussion about Pennsylvania’s Fish For Free Day.
Residents wanted to know if there were any special rules when fishing that day, but according to the supervisors, they were not aware of any special rules.
One resident asked the supervisors if someone wanted to stock fish in a designated stretch would that be allowed.
The supervisors had no problem with stocking the fish, but when it came to the second question, can vegetation and overgrown spots be cut down to access fishing spots, Supervisors’ Chairman Brian Ahner suggested not to take out anything really big like a shrub and just trim the weeds and high grass.
New truck
The township is looking into buying a single axle dump truck that is big enough to plow snow. The supervisors think they have found one that is a good fit. According to Ahner, who is roadmaster, the cost is $150,000 this year, but if they wait until next year to purchase the same truck, the dealer said the price will be $180,000. After they inspect the vehicle, a decision will be made.
Fire company
The supervisors approved the fire company’s request to use the field at the township park to accommodate people attending the Cruise-In & Dine Outside from 5-9 p.m. June 4 and 2-8 p.m. June 5.
Following the approval, the supervisors discussed issuing the fire department a blanket agreement for the year to use the field for their events, as long as there was no conflict with previously scheduled events.
Secretary Rebecca Tippett said they would need to contact the insurance company first. The motion to contact the insurance company and issue the blanket agreement was approved.
In other business
Robert Butler, the Parks and Recreation chairman, said he was happy to report during this past month, Monroe County Garden Club planted two trees in the walking park in honor of Arbor Day. The Parks and Recreation Board had a secondary planting day, and they planted about another 25 trees.
“It was a great show with the guys here using the bucket loader to plant the trees. All the club members said it was like watching a skilled surgeon, so kudos to them,” he said.
The Veterans Memorial Committee is ready and hoping for good weather for their Memorial Day Service on Sunday.
Repairs have been made to the monument and the supervisors have power washed it, thanks to the fire company for providing the firetruck and water. The service starts at 2 p.m., so the committee asks people to arrive at least 15 minutes early because of the expected crowd.
• Ahner said the township will most likely receive money from the American Rescue Plan. The supervisors are looking into using a management company to help make the best use of any funds the township does receive. At this time, the supervisors are exploring all options.
• West End Ambulance reported 32 emergencies, five hours of training, and 49 hours of fundraising for April.
