Local Roundup: Results from May 11

Three area teams recorded victories on the diamond on Tuesday - and all of them did so in impressive fashion.

The Palmerton baseball team, Marian softball team, and Weatherly softball team all rolled to mercy-rule victories.

BASEBALL

Palmerton-Northern Lehigh

Palmerton won its third straight game, cruising to a 12-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Blue Bombers received big games from their top two hitters in the lineup. Leadoff man Ethan Recker had two hits, scored four runs and had an RBI, while No. 2 man Cole Serfass delivered a pair of hits, scored twice and knocked in three runs.

Palmerton (11-8; 10-7) also received a hit and three RBIs from Kaleb Eitner, while Brock Bollinger had a triple and two RBIs. Jacob Sutton contributed two hits and scored twice.

The Bulldogs, who dropped to 1-18 overall and 1-16 in the league, were paced by Chase Misera’s two hits and an RBI.

Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe

Blue Mountain broke open a close game by scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning and pulled away for a 14-2 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Derrick Yuengling had a pair of RBI doubles during the big fifth frame that helped the Eagles (12-4; 10-1) clinch the Division 1 title.

The Olympians, who were eliminated from the league playoffs with the loss, held a 2-1 advantage after four innings. Thorpe’s Jared Marykwas tripled and scored on a single by James Lordi, while a sacrifice fly by Ian Hubbard accounted for the other tally.

Caiden Hurley chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

The loss dropped the Olympians to 11-8 overall, and 6-5 in the league.

North Schuylkill-Lehighton

North Schuylkill clinched a berth in the Schuylkill League playoffs with a 12-3 victory over Lehighton.

The two teams were tied 2-2 after one inning of play, but the Spartans plated three runs in both the second and fifth innings to take control of the game.

Jaxson Chowansky had two hits and knocked in four runs for the winners, who claimed the Division 1 wild card.

The Indians (2-15; 0-11) received a pair of hits from both Dylan Bowman and Richard Faila. Bowman added a run and an RBI. The Tribe’s Aiden Rarick and Randy Bongiorno each contributed a hit and a run scored.

Liberty-Northwestern

Liberty limited Northwestern to just three hits in posting an 11-0 nonleague victory.

The Tigers (16-4) entered the game averaging 10.7 runs per game, but were shut out for the first time this season.

The Hurricanes’ Eric Ludwick finished with three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs. The winners also received a two-run dinger off the bat of Brayden D’Amico.

Panther Valley-Minersville

Hayden Paukstis kept Panther Valley’s offense silent as Minersville earned a 3-0 Schuylkill League victory.

Paukstis allowed just three hits and struck out eight in six and two-thirds innings.

Brett Chikotas delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning to help the Miners improve to 10-9 overall, and 5-7 in the league.

The Panthers (15-4; 9-3) received hits from Derek Pavlik, Cody Orsulak and Hayden Goida.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Tamaqua managed only two hits in dropping an 8-2 Schuylkill League contest to Pottsville.

The Blue Raiders scored single runs in the first two innings to keep the game tied at 2-2, but the Crimson Tide (8-9; 7-4) tallied six unanswered runs to gain the victory.

Patrick Yoder earned the win with six strong innings, and helped his own cause with a two-run triple.

Tamaqua, now 5-11 overall and 2-9 in the league, received an RBI-single from Nate Wickersham and a hit and run scored from Joel Shellhammer.

Weatherly-Shenandoah Vy.

Shenandoah Valley spoiled Weatherly’s return to the field as the Devils rolled to a 17-2 Schuylkill League victory.

The Wreckers (1-12; 0-9) hadn’t played in 12 days, but jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Shenandoah, however, countered with four runs in the home fourth, and put the game away with a nine-run fourth.

Luke Matta had three hits and four RBIs for the winners, now 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the league.

Weatherly’s Antonio Colecio had a double and scored both runs, while Yasin Zuberi added a hit and an RBI.

SOFTBALL

North Schuylkill-Lehighton

North Schuylkill rolled to 11-0 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Morgan Dinger was in control on the mound for the Spartans, tossing a two-hitter and striking out 10.

Kendra Peterman’s double and Maggie Paggoto’s single were the lone Indian hits.

Lehighton falls to 2-15 overall and 1-12 in the league. North Schuylkill moves to 14-4 overall, and 12-1 in league play.

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Mia Nemeth’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed Marian to walk off with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Mahanoy Area in a Schuylkill League game.

Athena Matenkoski joined Nemeth in celebrating their “Senior Day” with home runs. Matenkoski’s blast was a three-run shot in the third inning.

Matenkoski was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, as the Fillie finished with a double, triple, home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. Nemeth added a single in addition to her home run, and knocked in two runs, while Jackie Guth also had two hits.

Morgan Kelly tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven to earn the pitching win for the Fillies (9-5, 7-5).

PM East-Pleasant Valley

Ashey Carlson tossed a no-hitter, and Jade Van Winkle belted a pair of home runs as Pocono Mountain East rolled to a 15-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Carlson struck out three in the five-inning mercy-rule victory. She allowed three walks.

Van Winkle had a solo home run for the Cardinals in the first inning, and added a grand slam in a big nine-run fourth inning that put an exclamation point on the win. She finished with three runs scored and five RBIs.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Pottsville rallied for a 9-5 Schuylkill League Division I victory over Tamaqua.

The Tide used the long ball to ignite its comeback, hitting three home runs in the game.

Taylor Welsh had two of the homers, ripping a solo shot in the third, and a two-run shot in the sixth. Jade Weiss added a three-run homer in the fifth.

Bryn Clifford led Tamaqua offensively with a double and a solo home run. Ella McLaughlin (three singles, run scored, RBI); Alexus Warne (two singles, three RBIs) and Kailey Richards (two singles) also had big games.

Ashley James had four hits, two of the doubles, and knocked in six runs to power Weatherly to an 18-1 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley.

The Wreckers (9-5; 5-4) scored 10 times in the first inning and cruised to the win.

Marissa Hoffman contributed a three-run homer, while Maddie Von Frisch allowed just one hit in three innings.

Panther Valley-Minersville

Minersville’s Aramie Arroyo pitched a one-hit shutout in leading her team to a 15-0 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Arroyo also drove in four runs on offense to help the Miners improve to 12-6 overall, and 9-3 in the league.

The only hit by the Panthers (1-16; 0-11) came from Lucy Greco.
