Where we live: Vaccine hunting

Over the past several months, I have clicked, posted social media and tried my best to find vaccine appointments for myself, as well as friends and family.

I have been pretty successful at doing this, and I think part of that luck is due to my obsessive personality when it comes to things like this. When I find something that intrigues me, I tend to latch on, and vaccine hunting was the thrill I needed during this pandemic.

I stalked websites, figured out days and times when they posted new appointments and clicked (and clicked, and clicked).

I would tell people jokingly that the lure of finding a vaccine appointment was like a rush of adrenaline, almost like winning a jackpot at a casino.

On Tuesday, I stumbled upon a video that gave me hope, almost like the rush of finding an appointment.

It was of Joe Pinto, chief operating officer of St. Luke’s Lehighton Campus, who was with Carbon County Commissioner Chris Lukasevich, live on Facebook.

In the video, Pinto announced that people age 16 and older can go to the Lehighton campus and get their vaccine without having to hunt for the once elusive appointments. The official announcement by St. Luke’s happened moments after this video posted.

To get a vaccine, if you want one, all you need to do is show up at the Lehighton campus during a clinic day and roll up your sleeve. You get your follow-up appointment before you leave.

“We have over 2,000 shots of Moderna and Pfizer and are excited to start vaccinating this community,” Pinto said during the announcement. “We want to make it as easy as possible for the community to get their vaccine.”

I give St. Luke’s credit: walking up and getting it without worrying about an appointment is the easiest way for anyone who wants a COVID-19 vaccine to get one.

Clinics will be operating from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday; as well as from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday. Both clinics will take place at St. Luke’s Lehighton Campus and will use the Pfizer vaccines.

“We are encouraging the community for your family, your friends and the community in general to use this as a golden opportunity to get a vaccine and put an end to this pandemic,” Pinto said.

Now, I would be remiss if I didn’t also give credit where credit was due regarding getting these shots into arms. To all the other distributors who have tirelessly organized mass inoculation sites, as well as booked thousands of appointments over the past several months, kudos for all you have done and are still doing.

Lehigh Valley Health Network, Rite Aids, Mauch Chunk Pharmacy, CVS, just to name a few, have all given it their all to make sure every person who wants a COVID-19 vaccine has access to one.

From large-scale drive-thru clinics that LVHN has meticulously planned and successfully executed to small-scale businesses such as Mauch Chunk Pharmacy, which offered appointments whenever they could, these people and these organizations are helping us help not only ourselves, but the world as a whole.

For me, getting a vaccine was the right choice, not only for myself and my own peace of mind, but so I could finally hug my loved ones again without fear. I feel that my choice to get one has helped make this world a little brighter for the future in our fight against COVID-19.

If you want a vaccine, don’t wait. Tomorrow is never promised no matter how much you plan.

May you stay safe as we navigate our ways out of this dark time and back into the light.
