Palmerton votes 9-0 against Northface plan

Palmerton Area School District’s board of directors unanimously rejected a tax abatement request by Northface Development during its board meeting Tuesday night.

Northface Development Chief Operating Officer George Petrole had asked for the 10-year tax abatement to help support a proposal for four roughly 500,000-square-foot warehouses, one built each year starting in 2022, on the Northface property located just off Route 248 in Palmerton.

No PASD board members commented before voting 9-0 against the plan, but at a workshop two weeks ago, Board President Kathy Fallow said the district, along with representatives from Palmerton Borough and Carbon County “didn’t feel the abatement would be in the best interest of the community at this time.”

“It was discussed that the business partner involved here has not instilled a lot of faith in the community over the years,” Fallow said during the workshop.

Petrole asked the district, along with Palmerton Borough and Carbon County, to excuse a percentage of the additional tax revenue the buildings would bring in for however many years the Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance program would be in effect for the property.

In the first year of each building being constructed, Petrole said, 100 percent of the additional tax revenue would be excused, followed by 90 percent in the second year in and so on until 10 years had passed.

Petrole said the anticipated 2 million square feet of transportation, logistic and warehouse project in Palmerton would create about 475 construction jobs and bring about 1,500 new full-time employees.

Palmerton Borough also voted against the tax abatement proposal during its council meeting earlier this month.
