Mahoning supervisors look into lowering speed limit

The Mahoning Township Supervisors are looking to lower the speed limit on Breezewood Drive from the current limit of 35 mph.

The area does not qualify as a residential district because there are not enough houses along the road.

The only way to properly reduce the speed is to have a speed limit study and a weight limit study done by an engineer, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation rules.

The supervisors will check into estimates for having the studies done before authorizing them.

Recycling bin

Jim Koons from the Mahoning Township Lions Club addressed the supervisors to discuss a letter he received regarding the recycling bin the Lions Club has on the municipal building grounds on Route 902. The letter, dated Feb. 8, 2021, requested the group relocate the bin because people were allegedly dumping trash into the bin.

Roadmaster Nevin Frey said the township had to clean up trash that was around the bin.

The supervisors agreed to keep the bin where it is, but that members of the Lions Club would check it more often and clean it out as needed.

Canal project

The supervisors approved a motion to provide a letter of support for the Weissport Canal Overflow Project. The letter is needed by the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission to apply for a grant to do upgrades to two water overflow areas, one along Long Run Road, the other near the Boatyard.

The purpose of the grant is to do upgrades to prevent erosion, and to keep the waters from damaging the towpath. Lehighton has water lines along the towpath that could be damaged if flooded.

Short-term rentals

The supervisors tabled the resolution on the Airbnb ordinance.

Township solicitor Thomas Nanovic recommended that the supervisors read through the ordinance carefully, as there are a lot of details to it.

The ordinance is to provide guidance on how to deal with the nationwide short-term rental service and how it would apply to property owners in Mahoning Township.

Part-time police

The supervisors will also check on the contract it has regarding the hiring of part-time police officers.

According to Councilman Bruce Steigerwalt, “Contractually, we’re obligated to make an attempt to get more part-time police.”

They will check the contract to make sure they are following the agreement; and, if necessary, try to hire more part-time police.
