Several streets to be closed during Bowmanstown Bike Night
Several streets will be closed for Bowmanstown Bike Night this fall.
On a 4-1 vote at a special meeting on Tuesday, borough council agreed to shut down Hamilton Street from Fireline Road to Lime Street, Lime Street from Ore Street to Green Street, Mill Street from Hamilton Street to Ore Street, and Ore Street from Mill Street to Lime Street.
Hosted by Rodrigues Bike Event, Bike Night will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 from the Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company. The rain date is Sept. 26.
Before the vote, Mayor Zach Snyder asked how the borough would notify all the residents of Hamilton Street.
Council President William Ravert said he believes council should send out a letter.
Councilman Rob Moyer, who voted against the motion, said the borough is only responsible for closing the roads.
Council’s decision didn’t sit well with Cheryl Frey and Judy Hoffman, representing Emmanuel United Church of Christ.
Frey asked what will happen to their pickup fundraiser that is scheduled to be held the same day as Bowmanstown Bike Night, since the church is located on Hamilton Street.
Councilwoman Candace Rodrigues said she reached out to them to hold a meeting between the church and Bike Night sometime before Tuesday’s special meeting, but that never happened.
Delivery for the church’s fundraiser is set to arrive anytime between 1:30-2 p.m. Sept. 25.
They asked to portion it off, or to leave a handicap spot open for the delivery truck.
As part of its motion, council agreed that only a delivery truck set to drop off items at the church the day of the event will be allowed through Hamilton Street from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
That prompted Frey and Hoffman to ask what would happen if the event fell on the rain date of Sept. 26.
Snyder assured there would still be access to the church.
Moyer said he had concerns about the closure going all the way to Fireline.
However, Snyder said closing Hamilton doesn’t create any additional problem.
Snyder reiterated that regardless of what event is held in the borough, there is bound to be an inconvenience when it comes to parking.
“It’s going to create an inconvenience for eight hours,” Snyder said.
Resident Barbara Eastland asked if there were provisions for any police activity.
Rodrigues said there will be several off-duty officers from surrounding areas, and that as of Tuesday night, she had five lined up.
Councilwomen Kara Scott and Donna Winter were absent from Tuesday’s special meeting.
It was stated at last week’s meeting that Hamilton Street would be the better street to close down due to the potholes on Ore Street, as well as being a way to regulate the bikes from coming into town.
Resident Joe Rodrigues said at that time that at least 150-200 bikes would be in attendance, and that there would likely be more throughout the day.
