Schuylkill man led police on chase through two counties

A Schuylkill County man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed chase through two counties, being involved in a crash and then leaving the scene, and finally being taken into custody.

State police at Hamburg identified the suspect as Jason Smith, 46, of Pottsville.

According to troopers at 4:05 p.m. Saturday they received numerous calls regarding a black Mercedes-Benz SL55 traveling north on Route 61 in Perry Township, Berks County. The reports indicated the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and being driven erratically. Troopers located the vehicle in the area of Jetson Drive and Route 61. They attempted a traffic stop but the driver, later identified as Smith, refused to stop.

The vehicle continued north into Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, when troopers attempted a induced stop. The suspect vehicle avoided the maneuver and passed the front patrol vehicle striking the front end. The suspect vehicle continued northbound at a high rate of speed and then rear-ended a 2015 Ford C-Max SUV driven by William H. Fitch, 67, of Berwick, at Route 61 and Summer Mountain Road, in West Brunswick Township.

After impact the suspect vehicle continued northbound. A stop stick was utilized and successfully deployed but the suspect vehicle continued to flee. Due to extreme high rate of speeds troopers lost visual of the vehicle.

It was later located in the parking lot of the Crossroads Inn, located at 2 E. Adamsdale Road, Schuylkill Haven. Smith was located in the vehicle and taken into custody. It was later learned that Smith had an active arrest warrant for an incident in Wyomissing, Berks County, where he struck a woman with his vehicle and attempted to hit multiple offices of the Wyomissing police department.

Smith was arraigned on charges filed by Wyomissing police. Charges filed by state police include aggravated assault by vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving under the influence, reckless endangering, accidents involved injury and attended vehicle and other motor vehicle code violations.

Troopers noted Fitch and his passenger, Lora L. Fitch, 58, were not injured.
