Hope is available via text for victims of domestic violence through Schuylkill Women in Crisis’s textline.
The new service started March 1.
“There is that pandemic within the pandemic for domestic violence victims,” Amy Newton, communications director for SWIC, said.
With people urged to stay away from others early on in the pandemic, domestic violence victims were potentially at higher risk for abuse. She said providing the way for them to text is another “way for them to reach out for help.”
By texting “HOPELINE” to 20121, people can get support and information they need. The text goes to a computer system where employees see it.
“We can respond right back through our computer,” Newton said.
Those seeking help will receive an opt-in message and can say why they are texting. They can also wait for an advocate to respond.
The service is available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If someone texts after hours, they will receive a message saying the service is not available presently.
Newton said the goal is for the service to be available 24/7 like the telephone hotline at 570-622-6220 or 800-282-0634. Visit s-wic.org for more information,
Calling 911 is best if there is an emergency, she said.
