Pa. virus update: 5,338 new cases

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed as of noon Friday, there were 5,338 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 794,172.

There are 4,758 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 851 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

The trend in the 14-day moving average number of hospitalized patients per day has increased by nearly 4,500 since the end of September.

Statewide percent positivity for the week of Jan. 8 – Jan. 14 stood at 12.7%.

As of Thursday, Jan. 21, there were 193 new deaths reported for a total of 20,321 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Local numbers:

• Carbon County added 47 new cases for a total of 4,072. Deaths remain at 113.

• Lehigh County has 26,311 cases, an increase of 178, with seven more deaths for a total of 644.

• Luzerne County has 21,367 cases, an increase of 172. There were four more deaths, bringing the total to 564.

• In Monroe County, there are 85 new cases since Wednesday for a total of 8,025. One more death was reported for a total of 235.

• In Northampton County, there are 226 additional cases, for a total of 21,553. There were seven additional deaths for a total of 542.

• Schuylkill County reported 10,601 total cases, 85 new cases. Three more deaths were reported for a total of 314.
