Group collects coats, gloves for area residents

The chilly weather brings thoughts of a winter wonderland if you have a warm coat, gloves and a scarf.

But, what if you don’t? Shannon Arendt and Jennifer Merkel of Palmerton want to make sure that children and their adults have adequate cold weather gear.

They are currently collecting and offering coats, hats, scarves, mittens and gloves to anyone in need. The coat drive is sponsored by Palmerton’s “Kids for the Community” project which Arendt and Merkel helped start.

According to Arendt, about “100 coats have been donated and about a dozen have been given out.”

She would like to see more needy residents stop by the park on Sundays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Coats can be donated at 630 Franklin or brought to the park on Sundays. Coats should be gently used, stain and hole free, and Merkel added, “please check the pockets; we have someone’s car keys!”
