First house decorating contest underway in Northern Lehigh

Homeowners in the Greater Northern Lehigh community are being urged to light up their respective towns as part of a new event.

Whether it’s inflatables, garlands, wreaths or any other decoration, the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber wants homeowners to participate in their House Decorating Contest.

The contest is open to residents who live in the communities of Slatington, Walnutport and Washington Township, and submissions are being accepted until Tuesday.

Participants are asked to submit their home, or the address of a home they admire, through the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber’s application, according to Andy Gildner, chair of the GNLCC Board.

“In a year of physical distancing, our events committee wanted to have a safe way for our community to show Christmas cheer,” Gildner said. “The house decorating contest is one way to show our fellow neighbors good will and joy. We encourage our neighbors and friends to nominate the ‘Clark Griswold’ of their neighborhood.”

Prizes will be awarded to the top contender in each community, with a special gift going to the grand prize winner, according to Kylie Adams, Manager of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“With an eye to our local businesses, a gift certificate to a local restaurant is up for grabs,” Adams said. “That, of course, and good, old-fashioned bragging rights.”

The board of directors will judge the homes submitted and announce winners via Facebook on Dec. 18.
