Man arrested after armed standoff in Slatington

An armed man was taken into custody after a standoff Saturday afternoon outside a home in Slatington.

Borough police Chief Dave Rachman said the incident occurred sometime between 2-3 p.m. at a home in the 300 block of Main Street.

“It began as a domestic situation, that’s what prompted it,” Rachman said. “I guess there was supposed to be a custody exchange; apparently, the subject was not happy with the arrangement.”

Rachman explained what occurred once police arrived on scene.

“The initial officer, with assistance of a friend of the subject, were able to get him to release his two children from the apartment,” he said. “The Lehigh County MERT Team was assembled and ready to go, and just as they arrived, the guy emerged from his apartment and was taken into custody.”

Rachman declined to release the man’s name, as he’s presently under psychiatric care.

He said there were no injuries, and added the standoff went on for about an hour.

Rachman said no charges will be filed.

He said that in addition to the Lehigh County Municipal Emergency Response Team, also assisting police at the scene were the Walnutport Police Department, Lehigh Township Police Department, and state police.
