Kunkletown men face charges in kidnapping, assault

Three Kunkletown men face charges after police said they kidnapped and assaulted a man in the early morning hours of Nov. 11.

Troopers with the State Police Fern Ridge barracks received a call around 1:30 a.m. that morning from the roommate of the victim, who he said had been kidnapped from their Penn Forest Township residence by Shane Tyler Horton, 22; Anthony Nava, 37; and Jamel Kaseim Svendsen, 30; and taken to a Polk Township home on Victoria Arms Circle in Kunkletown.

Police responded to the Kunkletown home and spoke with the victim, who said the trio arrived at his home and Horton accused him of “having sex with his baby mama.” Horton also accused the victim of having assaulted him at a party in the summer of 2020.

The victim denied the allegations, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed at Magisterial District Judge Eric Schrantz’s office in Jim Thorpe, but the trio forced him into the back seat of their vehicle, where he was assaulted on the way to Kunkletown.

Once at the Kunkletown residence, Horton pointed a gun at the victim and threatened to kill him, cut his throat and rape him, police said. The victim was also struck multiple times in the arms and torso with a baseball bat.

“Horton and Nava took turns striking him with the bat,” police said.

The victim was also struck in the face with the gun.

The trio moved the victim to the second floor of the home, where Horton and Nava started to fight with him.

According to police, the victim said Horton’s sister tried to stop the fight, but was restrained by her boyfriend. Troopers then arrived at the residence, secured the scene and took the trio into custody.

Nava was transported to the hospital after complaining about drug withdrawal symptoms. While at the hospital, Nava told police the firearm used in the incident was stolen. Nava said Horton threw a different firearm in the woods behind the residence before troopers arrived on scene and that the gun used in the incident was hidden in the walls of the residence. Nava also said they kidnapped the victim because he owed them money for narcotics.

Horton faces charges two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault and one count each of kidnapping, terroristic threats and false imprisonment, while Svendsen faces one count each of aggravated assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and simple assault.

Horton is in Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000. Svendsen posted a $100,000 surety bond.

Both are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.

A criminal complaint against Nava also lists two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault and one count each of kidnapping, terroristic threats and false imprisonment. The case, however, remains inactive as Nava has yet to be arraigned.
