Enforcement of move over law needed

I read the story on the front page of Saturday’s paper about the proposed move over law. I was upset that some drivers think the fine could be $500 and that is too much. Maybe they should be made to stand along the Interstate with drivers zipping by 5 or 10 feet away at 60-plus mph while looking at their phone. I am sure then they would have a different idea. I see it regularly.

The missing part of the law is enforcement. Not enough drivers are being stopped for this violation. I am sure in the day of modern computer information a police officer could tell if it is the first offense or not. Maybe first offense a small fine, but after that bring on the big money. But the police have to make an effort to catch drivers not moving over or slowing way down if they can’t.

Traps are the answer. Similar to speed traps where the unmarked car sits behind the tow truck and when a car zips by at 60 without moving over a car or two down the road pulls them over. That is the only way to get the point over. If I got stopped I would tell other people about it, and just like when drivers go through the little towns they heard about with speed traps and they slow down they would move over away from the workers.

Yes, it is labor intensive, but it is better than the alternative!
