Lehighton Borough Council recently discussed the following items:
• Council members expressed concern that police officers were responding to a lot of mutual aid calls in other municipalities. Council member Autumn Abelovsky said she has concerns that other municipalities “are starting to rely on us more and more.” The mayor will look into the matter.
• The council agreed to advertise for a new trash collection contract, which will include recycling.
• A fireworks ordinance will be advertised for adoption next month.
• A Christmas decorating contest will be held in the borough with judging to occur the week of Dec. 21.
There will be prizes of six commercial credits of $100 each and 10 residential credits of $25 each. The residential judging will be done by borough council members. The commercial contest will be administered by the Main Street Steering Committee.
• Zion United Church of Christ was granted permission to close a section of Iron Street from Center Alley to Second Street from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 26. The rain date will be Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m.
• The council will seek a Department of Community and Economic Development multimodal grant totaling $818,921 to create safe pedestrian connections and calm motorist traffic along the waterfront at Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard.
• The Lehighton Lioness Club was given permission to hold a pink light walk on Oct. 6.
