Northern Lehigh approves spectator plans for games

Northern Lehigh will allow band, cheerleaders and some parents to attend high school varsity football games this fall.

The school board agreed Monday night on plans for spectators at sporting events.

“You have the entire marching band, cheerleaders, both teams, officials, medical crews, there’s not much left once you get to 250, and we are going to make it a priority to get at least some of our parents in to see those contests,” said Bryan Geist, athletic director for Northern Lehigh School District.

If the state’s current maximum of 250 spectators at outdoor events remains in place, the district will allow the band and cheerleaders to attend each event.

Parents of senior football players, band members and cheerleaders would also be able to attend.

Visiting teams would not be allowed to bring any fans, band or cheerleaders.

“Numerically you can’t fit under 250 if you include those groups,” Geist said.

For other outdoor sports, like soccer and field hockey, the district is recommending that only family members from both the home and away team attend.

“I’m always a proponent of our student body attending games, but we prefer that at this point, having our parents and siblings attend those events. That’s the position the league has taken,” Geist said.

The board also made plans in case more fans are allowed.

A bill recently passed by state lawmakers would allow school districts to decide how many spectators they can admit to games.

Gov. Tom Wolf has not signed the bill and has said he plans to veto it. However, lawmakers have pledged to override the veto.

Further complicating the situation, a federal judge on Thursday ruled that Wolf’s restrictions on crowd gatherings are unconstitutional. The Wolf administration says they will appeal the decision and delay it from taking effect.

If the district is allowed to admit more fans, more family members would be allowed. That includes all immediate family members, including stepparents, for all players, band members and cheerleaders to attend games.

Fans would still be required to maintain social distance and wear masks.

Under normal conditions, the stadium holds about 2,300 people.

Due to the restrictions, the school will not be holding homecoming ceremonies during a football game. However, they plan to hold a separate homecoming, ceremony on Sept. 26 in the stadium.

The homecoming parade and dance have also been canceled.
