Carbon treasurer’s office returning to appointment only

Hunters looking to apply for doe licenses at the Carbon County Treasurer’s Office will not be able to do so in person this year.

On Thursday, Treasurer Ron Sheehan announced that his office is closing to the general public again as a safety measure to the county offices and his employees.

The treasurer’s office reopened to the general public on June 15 after being appointment only since March because of the pandemic.

Sheehan said that effective Monday, his office will again be seeing people by appointment only for services that cannot be completed online or through the mail.

“We were open to the public for the last seven weeks, and that was to accommodate general hunting licenses, senior lifetime license renewals, military licenses and disabled veteran licenses,” Sheehan said, adding that with the upcoming over-the-counter doe tag sales starting on Aug. 24, he felt there was no way to safely serve the public, while maintaining social distancing in his office.

“It would create an overflow in the second floor of the administration building, which would really compromise the safety of the general public and other offices of the county government,” he said.

Beginning Monday, services that can be completed online: hunting and fishing licenses on the Game and Fish and Boat Commission; and dog licenses on www.carboncounty.com should be done online and they will be processed.

Other services that cannot be completed online, such as lifetime dog licenses, small games of chance and bingo licenses can be mailed in to his office.

In addition, beginning Monday, all applications for antlerless deer license sales must be mailed in using the pink antlerless license mailing envelopes, which can be obtained at any local agent or are available in the vestibule of the Carbon County Administration Building in Jim Thorpe.

That means that over-the-counter sales for licenses in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D and second doe tags will now need to be mailed in instead of having a mail-in round and in-person round.

“You can still apply for your unlimited 2B, 5C and 5D licenses, but you will have to do it through the mail for everyone’s safety,” Sheehan said.

So far, in the first two weeks of processing licenses for the hunting season, the county treasurer’s office processed 5,000 doe tags, which were mailed out Thursday.

Moving forward, they will be mailed out on Fridays.
