A man shot to death following a standoff with state police Monday morning has been identified.
Monroe County Coroner Tom Yanac said the man was Joey Hoffman, 40, of Jim Thorpe.
Yanac said his cause of death is still pending.
State police at Stroudsburg said the incident occurred at 9:57 a.m. at a residence along Mosier’s Knob Road, in Smithfield Township.
According to police, troopers responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check on a man acting erratically.
On scene troopers encountered Hoffman, who pulled into the driveway operating a blue Ford pickup.
As troopers spoke to Hoffman regarding the incident, he began to act erratically, calling them names and making claims that the property was booby-trapped. As troopers attempted to detain Hoffman, he pulled away and fled into a nearby garage.
While in the garage, Hoffman continued to disobey the trooper’s commands to exit. When troopers approached the garage, Hoffman appeared in the doorway and pointed a laser sighted handgun at them. Hoffman refused to drop the gun. Troopers then fired, striking him in the chest, killing him.
The county district attorney’s office and state police are continuing their investigation into the incident and said updates will be provided when more information is available.
