Carbon County officials have extended the restrictions on the swimming area of Mauch Chunk Lake for at least one more week.

On Thursday, the commissioners ratified the resolution restricting the swimming area to county residents and season pass holders through July 16.

The camping area opened to everyone, regardless of residency, on July 1, and campers can also use the beach area.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that the beach will remain restricted to 600 people to allow for proper social distancing.

He said the board requested a recommendation from the county parks and recreation commission, scheduled to meet Friday morning, on whether or not to restrict the beach area to county residents and season pass holders through Labor Day weekend.

Input from the community on the potential long-term restriction has been gathered and will be taken into consideration in the final decision.

The commission’s recommendation will then be considered during the commissioners’ July 16 meeting.
