Monroe man shot dead after standoff with police

A Monroe County man was shot to death following a standoff with state police Monday morning.

State police at Stroudsburg said the incident occurred at 9:57 a.m. at a residence along Mosier’s Knob Road, in Smithfield Township. The man’s name has not been released by troopers.

According to police, troopers responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check on a man acting erratically.

On scene troopers encountered a man who pulled into the driveway operating a blue Ford pickup.

As troopers spoke to the man regarding the incident, he began to act erratically, calling them names and making claims that the property was booby-trapped. As troopers attempted to detain him, he pulled away and fled into a nearby garage.

While in the garage the man continued to disobey the trooper’s commands to exit. When troopers approached the garage the man appeared in the doorway and pointed a laser sighted handgun at them. The man refused to drop the gun. Troopers then fired, striking the man in the chest, killing him.

The county district attorney’s office and state police are continuing their investigation into the incident and said updates will be provided when more information is available.
