Rock remediation work to resume on Mansion House Hill

Work related to a rock remediation project along Route 209, the Mansion House Hill, between Jim Thorpe and Lehighton will resume on Monday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said the road, from Oak Drive to the bottom of the hill in Jim Thorpe will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. There may be work on Fridays if it rains on one of the other weekdays.

“Crews will be performing work including curbing, paving and line painting,” PennDOT said in a Friday news release. “The work is part of the rock remediation project that began in March 2019 and is now anticipated to be complete in mid-June.”

PennDOT listed June 17 as the current expected completion date for the project.

Road-Con, of West Chester, has been in charge of the $3.55 million project. Ameritech Slope Contractors, one of the only companies in the country that handles this type of work, performed the rock scaling operation. Crews removed loose rock, placed around 700 rock anchors and installed mesh along the wall.

Work on this project, PennDOT said, will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.
