Carbon County prepares for primary election

Carbon County’s election bureau is beginning to prepare for the upcoming primary election on June 2, and voters may see some changes.

On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner read a report from Lisa Dart, director of elections, about mail-in and absentee applications, voter registration and the possibility of precinct changes.

Dart reminds everyone that her office is processing all applications as they come in. Previously she said her office was receiving upward of 350 applications a day for mail-in and absentee ballots.

Any voter who applied for one of these two types of ballots, up until Thursday, should receive their ballots within the next two weeks.

In addition, Ahner said the elections office has received 102 applications for mail-in or absentee ballots from people who are not registered to vote and reminded anyone wishing to cast a vote need to first register before applying for one of these ballots.

Voters who wish to cast ballots at a precinct may also find temporary changes as a result of the pandemic.

Dart said that her office may consolidate polling places for the primary as a way to try to help keep people safe.

“Each voter affected will receive notification in the mail prior to the primary,” she said.

Gov. Tom Wolf has urged Pennsylvania residents to apply for a mail-in ballot for the upcoming primary as a way to safeguard themselves during the pandemic.
