Renovations to Lehighton Skyline park to get underway
Renovations to revitalize a park in Lehighton are set to take shape.
Borough council on a unanimous measure Monday agreed to begin construction of a fence at Skyline Park, and to have borough Manager Dane DeWire obtain a permit from zoning.
Before the vote, Mayor Ryan Saunders said they were looking to get fencing put up at the park along North Third Street that would mirror the fencing they have at the Elwood James Blocker Memorial Field, at Sixth and Coal soccer fields.
Saunders said the first phase of the project is to put up new fencing.
From there, he said they would then look to restore the old swing sets there by repainting them and adding new chains and updated swings.
In November, council approved a resolution for authorization for the Lehighton Downtown Initiative to improve Skyline Park along North Third Street.
Saunders, who serves as president of LDI, said at that time that one of Behavioral Health Associates in Lehighton reached out to DeWire to see if there was anyway they could get involved in helping to revitalize the community.
They connected with Councilwoman Becky Worthy, also a member of LDI. BHA favored the park because they take students to Skyline frequently on field trips.
Saunders said BHA came back to LDI with a $75,000 check to help start revitalizing Skyline Park.
He said at that time LDI was putting together a steering committee comprised of members of BHA, LDI, representatives from Parks & Recreation, and DeWire.
Plans call for new landscaping, new swing sets, and a pavilion.
There have been other uses discussed for Skyline Park in recent years, with a dog park and a skate park among them.
