2020 primary election: Three Congress members who represent area municipalities seeking re-election

Three incumbent members of the U.S. House of Representatives who represent municipalities in the Times News coverage areas are facing re-election contests in 2020.

They include Rep. Susan Wild, Rep. Matt Cartwright and Rep. Dan Meuser, who represent the 7th, 8th and 9th Districts in Congress. All are seeking re-election to two-year terms.

As a result of the petition-filing process that ended on Tuesday at the state Bureau of Elections in Harrisburg, here is what voters in those districts can expect to see in the April 28 primary and Nov. 3 general elections:

7th District

Wild, of South Whitehall Township, won the seat in the 2018 election. She is a Democrat.

As she is unopposed, she will face the winner of a three-candidate GOP primary election contest in November. Those candidates include Lisa Scheller of Allentown, who is the owner of the Silberline Manufacturing Company in Hometown, Dean Browning of South Whitehall Township and Matthew Connolly of Bethlehem.

The district includes all of Lehigh and Northampton counties and parts of Monroe County.

8th District

Rep. Cartwright of Moosic used to represent Carbon County, but his district was drastically realigned in the last restructuring of the congressional districts. A Democrat, he still represents parts of Monroe County.

Unopposed in May, he awaits the winner of a six-person Republican battle that will be decided in the primary election. Those candidates include Teddy Daniels of West Wyoming; Harry Haas of Kingston; Mike Marsicano and Mike Cammisa, both of Hazleton; Jim Bognet of Hazle Township; and Earl Granville of Scott Township.

9th District

Rep. Dan Meuser of Dallas won the seat that represents all of Carbon County in the 2018 general election and is seeking re-election to a second two-year term. A Republican, he is unopposed in the primary election.

Meuser will face the winner of a two-candidate Democratic challenge in May. That is between Gary S. Wegman of Exeter and Susan L. Quick of North Londonberry Township.

In addition to Carbon County, the 9th District includes all of Columbia, Lebanon, Montour and Schuylkill counties and parts of Berks, Luzerne and Northumberland counties.
