Jim Thorpe to purchase new truck

Jim Thorpe Borough will have a new street truck in its fleet later this year.

Borough Council, last week, approved the purchase of a 10-ton 2021 Freightliner 108SD from Lancaster Truck Bodies. The truck, according to Borough Manager Maureen Sterner, cost $130,972.61 and was purchased through the state’s cooperative purchasing program, COSTARS.

“The purchase was budgeted for this year,” Sterner added at last week’s meeting.

Public Works Manager Vince Yaich said the truck, which will come with snow removal equipment, was desperately needed to fully modernize the borough’s vehicle roster.

“It’s replacing a truck that is over 20 years old,” Yaich said. “That truck, which is the oldest one we currently have, has been nickel and diming us for quite some time. Every time we send it out on the road, it ends up in the garage for a day or so having stuff fixed.”

The borough recently spent $1,300 to fix an alternator on it, he added. Though the order has been made, borough officials said delivery could take from 90-120 days.

“We do need the old one for this winter yet, but it’s outlived its life,” Yaich said.

After the old truck is taken out of commission, the borough, as it has for past equipment, plans to sell it on the Municibid website.
