Tuscarora and Locust Lake upcoming events

Several programs have been scheduled at Tuscarora and Locust Lake state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County in the coming weeks.

• On Saturday, at 6 p.m. a dive demonstration will be presented by the Ryan Township Emergency Rescue Dive Team. The program will be held in the south boat launch parking lot of Locust Lake. There will be a demonstration on protective gear, and the divers will enter the water with a wireless communicator and underwater video camera. Spectators will be able to talk to the divers underwater and view what the divers see on an underwater camera monitor. The program will end with a water safety class. Shine only.

• A Crow Trail hike at Tuscarora will be held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The hike is 3 miles long and easy. The trails meander through evergreens, old farmsteads and mountain laurel. The hike is free and open to the public. Meet in the Crow Trail parking area and bring water and bug spray. Shine only.

• A live animal presentation by Pam Ulicny is scheduled for Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Locust Lake Amphitheater. Ulicny has been a biology teacher in the Tri Valley School District for the past 20 years and has collected a classroom full of different species of exotic invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles. In her “Mrs. U-Zoo Revue,” she will discuss specialized niches and adaptations, biodiversity and responsible pet care. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Shine only.

• A hike at the Landingville Marsh will be held on Aug. 11. The trail is 3 miles long and easy. The hike will go around the marsh looking for wildflowers and critters and make a stop at the Auburn Dam. Meet at the Advances Auto Parks store in the Cressona Mall parking lot to carpool to the site at 10:40 a.m. The hike starts at 11 a.m. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. • Join the park naturalist on the “Spirit of Tuscarora Trail” at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 14, to search for summer wildflowers. The trail is 4.5 miles long and moderate in difficulty. The trail winds through several diverse habitats with a beautiful view of the Tuscarora Lake cove. There will also be a stream crossing. Meet in the upper beach parking lot near the trail head and bring a lunch. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Shine only.
