Air conditioning restored to county’s dog shelter

Air conditioning has been restored to the Carbon County dog shelter, officials say.

A motor with the air handling system in the kennel unit needed to be replaced after failing last week, the commissioners said on Thursday.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that it was not the unit itself, but the motor, which was not a stocked part.

“We had to order the motor,” he said, adding that it took a few days for the part to come in. “It wasn’t a stock item.”

The repairs were completed Thursday morning, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said after the meeting.

He added that there was communication between the county maintenance department and the shelter after the air conditioning broke and that at no time did the temperature in the shelter rise to be unbearable.

Fans were provided to try to keep the dogs comfortable, Gerhard said.

The board is still working to resolve the water issue at the shelter, and a tanker is in place to supply water for shelter use.
