Polk Twp. supervisors discuss truck purchase

The Polk Township supervisors on Monday discussed the purchase of another new plow truck.

“The truck we ordered last year took almost a year to be delivered,” Chairman Brian Ahner said. “If we are going to need another one, we need to start thinking about it now.”

Supervisor Carl Heckman pointed out that with that kind of delivery, timing an order now would still be delivered after next year’s snowy season. The matter was tabled until next month.

Ahner said a truck like the one just purchased will cost around $149,000. He added that a smaller dump truck would cost closer to $80,000.

Polk Township fire Chief Bill Tippett spoke to the supervisors about an opportunity that the fire company has to raise money by allowing the use of the parking lot to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a motorcycle training and safety course.

Tippett said PennDOT would pay a rental for the use of the lot and would indemnify the fire company and the township through its insurance company. Tippett asked the township to permit PennDOT to place a shed on township property that is adjacent to the firehouse.

Township solicitor James Fareri requested copies of all of the documents that make up the agreement to be reviewed and approved by the township. The request was approved subject to the satisfactory review of all documentation.

The supervisors also approved a request by the fire company for a parade to be held on June 8 in honor of the company’s 50th anniversary. Polk fire company needed the approval to obtain a permit from PennDOT. The parade route is along Burger Hollow Road and Interchange Road. The road closure is expected to last at least one hour.

The nature park is expected to reopen soon, according to Vincent Morello of the parks and rec committee. Some trees still need to be removed, but he expects it to be completed soon. The committee has also placed garbage and recycling receptacles at the walking park.

Morello added that the township has received 100 3-foot bare root trees from PPL to be planted in the park and that there are an additional 100 trees expected next month. The committee is looking for volunteers to help with planting the trees. Anyone interested can contact the township for additional information.

The township received a recycling grant and will begin work on the pole barn and loading dock soon.
