Children fall through ice in Weissport

Two children were treated after they fell through the ice on the Weissport Canal Saturday afternoon.

Lehighton Borough Fire Chief Patrick Mriss said the incident occurred just after 1 p.m. about a half-mile north of the main parking lot.

Mriss said upon the fire department’s arrival, the children were out of the water.

“Basically when we got there, they started walking back to the area of the parking lot,” Mriss said. “We encountered them, and brought them back to the parking lot where they met up with EMS.”

He said he wasn’t sure of their age, or where they lived.

Mriss said they were on scene for about a half-hour.

“Obviously, the ice was not the proper ice required for activity on the ice as far as Fish & Boat Commission standards,” he said. “Always monitor your ice conditions and use the PA Fish & Boat standards and recommendations for any activities on the ice.”

Also assisting at the scene were the PA Fish & Boat Commission, Lehighton ALS, and Lehighton Fire Police.
