Ten Carbon County offices up for grabs

The terms of 10 Carbon County officials are set to expire on the first Monday in January 2020, with the 2019 municipal election to decide whether they win new terms or if other candidates will assume directorship of the offices.

The Democratic and Republican parties will nominate people for those positions in the primary election scheduled for May 21, with the municipal election reserved on the calendar for Nov. 5.

To have their names placed on each parties’ ballots, a candidate must obtain 100 signatures on petitions that can be circulated from Feb. 19 to March 12.

Headlining the list of county officers to be decided this year are the three county commissioners seats, currently held by Wayne E. Nothstein of Lehighton, chairman, Tom J. Gerhard of Packer Township, vice chairman, both Republicans, and William J. O’Gurek of Summit Hill, a Democrat.

Other offices to be decided this year are controller, where Robert M. Crampsie of Summit Hill, a Democrat, has already publicly announced his intention to retire after 24 years in the office; Recorder of Deeds Emmett P. McCall of Lansford; District Attorney Jean A. Engler of Jim Thorpe; Sheriff Anthony C. Harvilla of Tresckow, Banks Township; Coroner Robert W. Miller Jr. of Mahoning Township; Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens of Penn Forest Township; and Clerk of Courts Francine Heaney of Nesquehoning.

The latter was appointed to the office upon the resignation of William C. McGinley, who retired.

Heaney has already announced her plans to seek election to the two years that remain on the term of office.

Behrens has also publicly announced her plan to seek re-election.

All of the officeholders listed above, with the exception of Nothstein and Gerhard, are registered to the Democratic Party.
