2018 in review: Christy captured in Ohio

Shawn Christy, a long-running Schuylkill County fugitive, spent three months dodging authorities in 2018. He was finally apprehended in Ohio.

Christy, 27, of McAdoo, was wanted by federal law enforcement after, amid other crimes, threatening to shoot President Donald Trump in the head on his Facebook page in June. He made that same threat toward Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli.

But according to his father, Craig, that’s not how it started. Craig said in September that Christy decided to escape after experiencing injustices on all sides of the criminal justice system. Craig said that “the McAdoo incident,” in which Christy allegedly attacked then-McAdoo Mayor Stephan Holly with a stick on March 15, 2017, sparked his son’s escape.

Craig said that Holly attacked Christy, not the other way around. But Christy was charged in the confrontation.

“He’s accused of crimes here in McAdoo that he didn’t commit. The injustice has to be fixed here,” Craig Christy said.

The jury selection for Christy’s trial was set to take place on May 30.

“We got a call from Shawn’s public defender, who told him he didn’t have to show up to jury selection,” the trial had been delayed, Craig Christy said.

Christy was out bushcrafting when his mother, Karen, spotted his name on a county bench warrant list.

The search for Christy began on June 6.

Christy’s run included stints in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, New York and finally, Ohio. Along the way, he is charged with breaking into businesses and homes, stealing guns, vehicles and food.

When he was finally found on Sept. 21, it was a police dog that sniffed out and took down Christy.

Since Christy’s return to Pennsylvania, he’s represented himself in court. In early December, he had preliminary hearings in three cases before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr., Weatherly. Allentown lawyer, Andrew Theyken Bench, has been present at Christy’s side.

Christy faces charges of breaking into Hallmark Industries on Sept. 13, and stealing multiple items.

He is facing charges in an Aug. 23 incident in which Christy is believed to have broken into a Packer Township building, as well as felony charges of burglary, criminal trespass, and theft, and a misdemeanor charge of theft, which stem from a July 7 in which Christy allegedly broke into his former employer, Hazleton Oil and Environmental. He is also facing charges in a break-in at Skipper Dippers in Rush Township.

On Dec. 11, a federal grand jury also issued an indictment charging Christy, who already faced charges of threatening the president, with hauling a stolen truck from Pennsylvania to New York. He now faces a total of 12 charges.
