Christy to stay in jail until trial

Shawn R. Christy, who fled federal agents for more than three months before his capture in Ohio, has been ordered held without bail as he awaits trial on federal charges.

A federal magistrate judge on Friday ruled that Christy, 27, would not be granted bail as he is a flight risk and a danger to the community.

Christy has been accused by federal agents of making threats against the president and other elected officials.

Christy was captured Sept. 21 in Ohio after a manhunt which lasted three months and spanned several states.

Following the hearing, Christy’s parents reiterated that they do not believe that Christy intended to carry out the actions he threatened against the president. Instead, they said, he was trying to draw attention to what he perceived was an injustice by authorities in Schuylkill County.

Prior to the manhunt, Christy was accused of attacking then-McAdoo Mayor Stephan Holly on March 15, 2017. “He wanted to bring more attention to his local case, which was right now where he was being railroaded by Schuylkill County District Attorney Michael O’Pake and the government of Schuylkill County. He wanted to bring attention to that,” Craig Christy said.

During the course of the three-month manhunt, Christy apparently returned to the McAdoo area and was accused of break-ins at local businesses and a relative’s house.

On Aug. 24, Christy was observed on a surveillance camera inside Skipper Dipper’s Ice Cream on Route 309 in Rush Township. But he was gone when agents investigated.

A few days later, an employee at the business reported seeing him sleeping in the dumpster outside.

On Sept. 5, Christy allegedly stole a shotgun from Skitco Iron Works in Hazle Township, located along 309 north of McAdoo. A week later, he stole a truck from the business.

The truck was found in Ohio a few days later. Five days after that, he was captured without incident by U.S. Marshals in Ohio.

Christy faces charges for threats against the president, interstate communication for threats against law enforcement and interstate communication for threats to injure another person.
