A taste of local food favorites to benefit cancer telethon

A unique buffet event will be a true taste of the past and a great celebration of ethnic and regional foods.

The “Ask Your Neighbor” Cookbook Buffet will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Coaldale Fire Company.

The event, sponsored by the Cancer Telethon Committee, will offer a variety of food items from the original recipes shared on the “Ask Your Neighbor” radio show on WLSH in the 1970s.

The cost of the buffet is $15 and also includes soft drinks. Tickets will be available at the door, but everyone is encouraged to call 570-645-4228 for tickets so that organizers can have the right amount of food prepared.

Menu items include German Green Bean Soup; Dinner Chowder; Chicken Divan; Marinated Kielbasi; Lettuce Salad with Russian Dressing; Pineapple Carrots; Scalloped Potatoes; Beef Casserole; Macaroni, Tomato and Cheese Casserole as well as a variety of desserts.

Ten thousand copies of the “Ask Your Neighbor” cookbook were printed in 1974 as a joint venture of WLSH Lansford and WPAM Pottsville when both radio stations were owned by Miners Broadcasting Service.

This 360-page cookbook is often referred to as Volume 1 and features 1,004 local recipes shared on the “Ask Your Neighbor” talk show. Alice Angst hosted the WLSH show and Helen Angst was the WPAM host.

Listeners would call and share their favorite home recipes and kitchen tips over live radio.

The book was reprinted as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society Telethon in 2014.
