Schuylkill County Fair opens Monday in Schuylkill Haven

“Cheers to 35 Years of Farms, Family, Fairs, Fun” is the theme of the 35th annual Schuylkill County Fair, which runs this Monday through next Friday.

The fairgrounds are located at 2270 Fair Road in Schuylkill Haven. The gate opens to the public at 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. Tuesday and Saturday. General admission is $5 and free for children 10 and under.

This year’s featured acts lineup has something for everyone.

Fair week kicks off with a performance by the New Individuals on Monday at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the M&T Stage. Tuesday will feature Laredo at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the M&T Stage.

The Mahoney Brothers will take the stage Wednesday at both 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Their first performance will showcase Jukebox Heroes Live and the second will be a tribute to one of the band’s influences, The Beatles.

Elvis impersonator, Shawn Klush, will perform Thursday at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the main stage.

The Schuylkill County country music sensation Chad Reinert will take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday. Following Reinert’s performance will be Nashville recording artist Joe Diffie at 9 p.m.

The Jesse Wade Trio’s show on Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. will feature oldies from the ’50s and ’60s. Jay and the Americans will showcase the rock ’n’ roll vocals of the 1960s and 1970s at 9 p.m.

There is a fee for some performances.

Throughout fair week, Goodtime Amusements will provide 20 different rides for both adults and children to enjoy, along with 15 food and game concessions.

With popular rides like Starship 3,000, Rocking Out and the classic Tilt-a-Whirl, there is bound to be something for everyone. Ride bands will be available to purchase on Tuesday starting at $10 for a 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. ride special and $20 for an all day pass.

The Kids’ Tent will offer a variety of activities for younger fairgoers, including a cupcake challenge where kids can decorate their own cupcake using the fair’s theme, Jello-O slurping and pie eating contests on Tuesday, which is Kids’ Day, at noon and again at 2 p.m.

The tent will be open daily and will be operated by The Arts Barn Education Center from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and noon to 7:30 p.m. on Kids’ Day, as well as from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Circus Incredible will also perform daily from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Special performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. on Family Day, which is Saturday, in the amphitheater.

Other fair activities include “Farming for a Day,” educational programs presented by Porcupine Pat Monday through Aug. 4, The Folk’s Butterfly Farm on Tuesday, and a performance by The Schuylkill Ballet Theatre, also on Tuesday, on the M&T Stage in the afternoon.

The Schuylkill County Fair’s eighth-annual truck pull will feature a wide range of vehicles. On Monday, contestants will get their chance to become this year’s fair truck puller.

Tuesday’s activities begin at 7 p.m. and will showcase track activities including Multi-Engine Modified Tractors, Hot Farm Tractors, Limited Pro Stock Semi’s, and East Coast Diesel-Pro Diesel and FWD Trucks.

This year marks the fair’s fifth Boilo Contest, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the PA Preferred Culinary Area of the fairgrounds. The competition is open to all adults age 21 and over from the coal region of Pennsylvania. You can enter both regular and apple-pie boilo.

Those interested in entering may bring their sealed bottles to be judged as early at 6:30 p.m.

As a way to preserve local history, the Agricultural Museum will hold an antique threshing machine demonstration at 6 p.m. Friday. The museum strives to uphold its mission of “preserving the history of local agriculture through many diverse means.” Over the past 24 years it has been offering exhibits operating antique farm machinery, equipment, engines, self-guided tours, woodworking tools, a sawmill and household appliances.
