Thousands witnessed a sky filled with blazing color Saturday night as Tamaqua entered the final weekend of a month-long program in homage to fallen heroes.

“Fireworks over Tamaqua” went off without a hitch after a feared rainstorm or even a thunderstorm never materialized.

Many residents set up chairs near their homes, on street corners and at various mountainside vantage points throughout the community.

Hundreds packed Depot Square Park, enjoying food and live music while others opted to watch the spectacle up high at “The Pines” on Washington Street near Trinity Church.

“This whole celebration has been great,” said Lynn Pavlick Myers of Tamaqua, on hand with husband Gary.

Myers said she made sure to attend every special Tamaqua Remembers event held throughout the month.

“I didn’t miss a thing. The speakers were very interesting. I wish they had more events like this in town.”

Spectator Rosalind “Pixie” Hosler of Mary D enjoyed the spectacle and recalled that Tamaqua once hosted yearly fireworks displays that were very popular.

“Long ago they used to do it up near the high school,” Hosler said.

Doris Nelson of Tamaqua said it’s always enjoyable to watch the dramatic bursts of color when the fireworks explode high above.

“I love when they open up,” she said.

The event, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day and Tamaqua’s century and a half devotion to war heroes, was sponsored by Basile’s Italian Delight Restaurant and Pizzeria, Hometown.

The fireworks were set off from a location near Mount Pisgah at the East End of town.
