Two storm-related crashes reported

State police at Frackville reported on two storm-related crashes that occurred Wednesday in the same general area of East Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County.

The first crash was reported at 7:31 a.m. along Route 895 (Summer Mountain Road) as Sergio C. Velez, 39, of Hazleton, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Express cargo van westbound during the snowstorm. Velez lost control on the slippery roadway and the van slid onto the berm and into a yard at 622 Summer Mountain Road, causing damage to a french drain at the edge of the yard. The van came to rest on its passenger side facing south.

Velez was not injured. He was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed, tire equipment and traction surfaces violation (two bald tires) and expired inspection sticker.

The second crash was reported at 8:40 a.m. along Route 443 (Clamtown Road). Ben P. Houser, 47, of Lehighton, was driving a 2007 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck westbound, a half-mile east of New Ringgold borough, when he lost control due to the snow-covered and slippery conditions. The truck slid into and up a dirt embankment after crossing over the oncoming lane. The truck then rolled onto its drivers’ side and came to rest in the westbound lane.

Houser was not injured. He was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.
