Schuylkill program receives funding for opioid crisis

Schuylkill County’s Drug & Alcohol program has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in government funding to help fight the opioid crisis.

County Finance Director Paul E. Buber at a public meeting Wednesday outlined the grants in a series of supplemental budget appropriation resolutions.

The grants are $108,512 in state funds for establishing a nonnarcotic assisted treatment pilot program; $191,447 in additional federal funds to support efforts to decrease the opioid crisis; $47,288 to decrease the heroin/opioid crisis; and $31,906 in additional state funding to decrease problem gambling.

In other matters, county commissioners approved extending the contract time for a demolition project at 70 Lakeside Ave., Delano, to April 30. Dudash Pipeline Co. is the contractor performing the demolition.

They also agreed to advertise for bids for a Community Development Block Grant project in New Philadelphia at the Holy Family Apartments.

The project consists of upgrading existing showers to walk-in showers.

Bids will be due in the controller’s office by 4 p.m. March 5. They will be opened and read aloud at a public meeting at 9 a.m. March 7. The tentative award date will be March 14.

Commissioners also awarded a $11,499.50 contract to ADM Logistics, Port Carbon, for a demolition project at 85 S. Tremont St. in Reilly Township.

Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved the co-op agreement for small American flags for Memorial Day.

The county Office of Veterans Affairs will be receiving 275 gross, or 39,600 flags.

The flags are used to honor/decorate the graves of deceased veterans on Memorial Day. The flags will be delivered the week of April 15. The cost is $0.559 per flag, or $22,136.40.
