Gardening for birds and butterflies

Shake off the winter blues and prepare for spring with a special presentation by Dr. Barbara Malt of the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society on “Gardening for Birds and Butterflies” at 1 p.m. March 3 at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 W. Walnut St. in Allentown.

Butterflies, moths and birds reflect the health of the ecosystem and provide numerous environmental benefits, including pollination and natural pest control. Sadly, butterflies and moths have been declining due to environmental degradation.

In the past 150 years, at least four butterflies and more than sixty moths have become extinct worldwide. Today many more face significant threats to their survival.

The number of American monarch butterflies has dropped 80 percent since the mid-1990s. It is a critical situation, but Dr. Malt will explain how gardeners can help by creating plantings that attract and sustain butterflies and birds.
