Lehighton school board cancels meeting

With its board of directors deadlocked on a ninth and final member, Lehighton Area School District canceled its regularly scheduled board meeting Monday night.

“A majority of the board polled indicated that the meeting should be canceled for a variety of reasons personal to them, including work commitments,” Lehighton Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said.

Three new Lehighton directors were seated in November’s general election. Since that point, a reorganization meeting was held on Dec. 4 and continued on Dec. 21.

The last regular meeting was held in November under the previous board.

According to Cleaver, however, it has been business as usual for the district staff.

“The board, in November, approved a motion to continue to operate the district until the next regularly scheduled meeting was held,” he said. “Accordingly, the cancellation has no effect on the day-to-day operations of the district. The motion made in November is one that has regularly been done over the holidays and winter months for many years. Another example, in some districts they do not hold a meeting during the July month, because of families scheduling vacations.”

Carbon County President Judge Roger Nanovic has scheduled a Feb. 27 court hearing to hear from the nine interested individuals in the ninth board seat.

Lehighton’s next board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26.

“If a meeting is not held in January, the board must meet at least once in February,” Cleaver said.
