Arsenic and Old Lace

The Tamaqua Area Community Theatre will present the stage play "Arsenic and Old Lace" at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, with three performances in September.

Playwright Joseph Kesserling wrote the play in 1939, opening on Broadway in 1941. It was later made into a movie starring Cary Grant, with numerous revivals throughout the years. The dark comedy tells the story of the Brewster family, whose ancestors came to America aboard the Mayflower. Many of the family members are considered insane, including spinsters Martha and Abby Brewster, who end up poisoning their male boarders. The only sane member of the family is Mortimer Brewster, a writer, who has to deal with his aunts and the police, while falling in love with the girl next door.Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15 and 16, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sept. 16.For tickets or more information, call 570-668-1192, or visit the art center's website,
