Man faces theft, drug charges

A Tamaqua man faces drug charges in Tamaqua and theft charges in Carbon County after a retail theft at Walmart in Mahoning Township on Aug. 30.

Local police departments were asked to watch for a copper Ford Escape whose driver took two televisions from the retail store shortly before 11:30 a.m. The Escape's license plate came back to a Tamaqua address.Tamaqua Police noticed the Ford as it made a right turn on to Penn Street and followed it to the 100 block. Plainly visible in the back seat were two large TV boxes, a 55-inch TCL Roku and a 43-inch Phillips 4K. As Mahoning Township Police responded to Tamaqua, the driver of the Ford was identified as Antonio Soto, 51, of 131 Penn St., Tamaqua.On the driver's side floor were a badge, a phone, a lighter and a plastic container with marijuana inside. Also in the container was a candy wrapper harboring a piece of crystal, suspected to be methamphetamine.Soto faces charges in Mahoning Township related to the theft, and drug charges in Tamaqua, including possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia.
