Guedes gouges Tigers in Week 1

The kid from Colorado felt at home last Friday night - despite being on the road.

After getting his feet wet with Colonial League foe Northern Lehigh during his junior season in 2016, first-year Palmerton quarterback Tekoah Guedes didn't waste any time making a statement in Week 1 at Northwestern. The Tigers had no solution for Guedes's simple equation of running and passing. The senior signal caller rushed 18 times for 133 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 20 of a whopping 39 attempts for 229 more yards through the air.The final product was the Bombers' captain earning the Times News Player of the Week award."Our goal is to come out every week 1-0," Guedes said. "But beating Northwestern is always good; we really don't like them and they really don't like us. So it's really fun going into their house and beating them. We just had a good game plan going into things. We really studied hard on film, worked hard all week for it, and we came out and executed."Palmerton tallied 452 yards of total offense; numbers which the 2016 offense never produced, despite having one of the area's beat offenses. The style of offense that head coach Chris Walkowiak runs is another reason that Palmerton feels like home for Guedes."I like running the spread, it's a good fit for me personally," Guedes said. "With our team, we really have a good spread set up. The line stepped up huge last week, and the receivers are always making plays ... It's a team, and we truly want to play for each other. A lot of teams don't have that, but we do."Things didn't just click over night for the Bombers. Guedes said he's been training hard with his team for months."Since baseball season, we started working out together and starting to get to know each other," he said. "We're a bunch of brothers out here, we're playing for each other and we always have each other's back. That's a big attribute to our team, the transition has been smooth and we're playing well together. I've been working hard this whole offseason, and so did this whole team. We've really stepped up, and we were ready."Guedes has some impressive numbers to his name after Week 1, but what he brings to the Bombers off the field might be one of his biggest assets, according to Walkowiak."He's been a great addition since Day One when he came here," said Walkowiak. "I think the biggest thing is his maturity and his leadership. He was voted captain, which is a huge credit to him and what he's done for the team. He's a dual threat and very athletic. He picked up our system and adapted well to it. We're happy to have him."
