Nazareth cruises past Pleasant Valley

NAZARETH - Every team faces question marks at the beginning of the season.

Some loom larger than others. After a 50-10 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference loss to Nazareth on Friday night, Pleasant Valley will have to wait another week to find clarity."We learned that we didn't execute well," Bears' head coach Mark Versuk said afterward. "We made poor decisions. Coaching-wise, we made poor calls. We weren't prepared, and we need to do a better job."The Blue Eagles (1-0) set the tone early.Michael Lutte intercepted Pleasant Valley quarterback Brandon Keyes on the fourth play of the game and scampered 46 yards to put Nazareth in scoring position at the Bears' 15 yardline. Sophomore quarterback Anthony Harris hit senior Jahan Dotson for a touchdown on the next play.Dotson finished with eight catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Harris went 18-of-29 for 243 yards and tossed four touchdowns."The kids came to play, I'll tell you that. They really came to play," said Nazareth head coach Tom Falzone. "Putting 50 on the board is pretty nice. But more impressive to me is the 10 - holding them to 10 points. The defense came ready to play. They were cracking all night long."That's a big thing. We're relying on a lot of young kids, and you see that on the roster. There are sophomores everywhere out there. But they turned up their play, and they did a heck of a job. The seniors led, and some of those big play players made some big plays for us. They just did a great job. We're pleased with that kind of start."Even when Pleasant Valley seemed to gain momentum, Nazareth was able to answer.Trailing 14-0 late in the first quarter, the Bears' defense came up with a big stop on fourth-and-five on at their own 25-yardline, only to fumble the ball away on their first offensive play. The defense held again on the Blue Eagles' ensuing possession, coming up with a goalline stand on fourth-and-one to keep the score 14-0.Pleasant Valley capped an 86-yard drive with a 31-yard field goal by Douglas Cummings to make it 14-3.Nazareth responded 72-yard kickoff return for a score by another sophomore, Nathan Stefanik."We stalled, got down to the one, and we didn't get that one in," Falzone said. "They stopped us, and that was a great job by them. But we responded to it, which was good."They responded, and that's the one thing this group has done. As young as they are, they're resilient, and they do respond."The Blue Eagles' defense pressured Keyes throughout, forcing three picks - two by Dotson - and a fumble as the Bears' struggled to move the ball."We couldn't run the ball, we couldn't block, we had trouble in the passing game, we couldn't protect Brandon," Versuk said. "It was a group effort tonight. We just gotta go back to the drawing board tomorrow. We got a lot of work to do."Keyes connected with Brent Beck for a 28-yard score in the third quarter. Keyes also ran for 54 yards, while Beck caught five passes for 66 yards.UP NEXT... Pleasant Valley hosts Allentown Central Catholic next Friday.LAST TIME...
