Rabid fox found in Schuylkill

A rabid fox was found in Schuylkill County on Monday, according to the Department of Health.

The fox was located near the village of Lost Creek in West Mahanoy Township.

The Department is urging precautions for anyone who may have been bit the animal, or has a pet who may have been.

Anyone who received a bite, or may have had significant contact with the animal's saliva is asked to contact the Schuylkill County state Health Center. DOH defines significant contact as a bite, scratch, or if the animal's saliva touches an open wound or mucus membrane.

The state health center can be reached at 570-621-3112 Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. They can also be reached 24 hours a day at 1-877-PA-HEALTH.

If you believe your pet has been bit, contact your veterinarian for advice about protecting you and your family.

Residents are reminded to get a rabies vaccine for all pets -- dogs cats and ferrets -- since other animals in the area may develop rabies.

It is also advised to avoid contact with wild or stray animals -- especially bats, raccoons, foxes and skunks.

There are roughly 400 cases of rabies among animals confirmed each year in Pennsylvania. In 2016, there were two confirmed cases of rabies found in animals in Schuylkill County, and two in Carbon County. Bucks County had more rabies cases than any other in the state, with 24.
