Construction work underway in Tamaqua area

Construction projects in and around Tamaqua are progressing.

Tamaqua Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt advised council Tuesday night that a pre-project meeting for the Wabash Creek culvert repairs had been held and the work will get underway the week of July 31. He noted that a lot of the work will be done in the area of the Tamaqua Public Library. The contractor has 60 days to complete the repairs. This is a different project than the bridge replacement slated for next year, which will close the unit block of West Broad Street and require a detour.Progress is finally being made on the sidewalk in front of the Family Dollar store on Center Street noted Steigerwalt. Councilman Ron Bowman had concerns that the concrete forms may have been removed from the upgraded curb too soon, and said the concrete looked pitted."I hope it holds up," he said.In other business, council denied a handicapped parking space application that had been previously approved for 156 Orwigsburg St. The original approval had been made in 2015, but since then, the applicant and the borough have been unable to reach an agreement as to where the sign should be placed. Council opted to deny the request as there are other requests for handicapped parking along the street.Applications for 125 Orwigsburg St., 215 Washington St., and 142 Penn St. were all approved.Council approved the permanent transfer of Richard Miller to a different position within the street department, pending the completion of his trial period. They voted to advertise the position that Miller vacated, as it has been posted interdepartmentally and there were no applicants. An executive session was held for personnel matters.
