CCTI approves former state police officer

Carbon Career and Technical Institute welcomed a new resource officer to the school during Thursday's meeting.

Francis "Frank" L. DeMatto was approved for a maximum of 190 scheduled days of service over a yearlong period, with a one-year contract rate of $158 per day, starting Aug. 1."We look forward to working with Frank, he is very well qualified, and we're very impressed," administrative director David Reinbold said.DeMatto has had an extensive career in the realm of the armed forces, police and security details. He has served eight years with the U.S. Navy, with an additional seven years in the Navy Reserves, along with a 20-year career as a Pennsylvania State Police Officer.DeMatto most recently worked as a school police officer for the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit #21."I love helping the kids, I love being involved. I know the school, and I thought I would be a good fit for the position. Apparently I was," DeMatto said. "I'm looking forward to interaction with the students, being a positive mentor."The board also approved the purchase of nearly $50,000 in computer equipment for the upcoming school year.The first order included 12 desktop computers, eight notebooks, two touch-screen notebooks and 10 care packs including three-year extended service for $18,238.52. The second order included 20 Lenovo ThinkStation Workstations, 40 Lenovo memory cards, and 20 Lenovo graphics cards for the drafting and design technology classroom, totaling $29,453.40. The drafting and design equipment was funded by the Carl D. Perkins grant, at no cost to the school.The board approved the following measures:Dr. Deborah Smith of Switchback Medical Center in Jim Thorpe was appointed as the school physician for the 2017-2018 school year, at a rate of $10 per individual school student examination.The law firm of King, Spry, Herman, Freund, and Faul was approved for specialized work projects requiring Pennsylvania Department of Education certification for the 2017-2018 school year, on an as-needed basis.Reinbold was appointed as the Records Retention Officer for the 2017-2018 school year.Custodial/maintenance/groundskeeper/cleaner Lamont D. Rodgers Jr. submitted a letter of resignation, effective July 24, 2017.The Cosmetology Scholarship Program for CCTI graduates to attain state Cosmetology Board Instructor/Manager licenses will continue at no cost for the school.Compulsory Student Accident Insurance for secondary students in the 2017-2018 school year will be purchased from Pennsylvania Church Insurers Agency LLC at a cost not to exceed $2,013. The insurance covers the school day, trips to and from school, field trips, cooperative education and job shadow/internship activities.Lunch prices for the 2017-2018 will be set at $2.60 for Type A, $0.40 for Reduced, and $5 for adults.Zimmerman's Dairy will be retained as the milk and juice supplier for CCTI in the 2017-2018 school year, with milk prices dictated by the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board.Transportation contracts were approved with the following contractors for the 2017-2018 school year, with the provision that each contractor will be paid any cost for gasoline used to fulfill the terms of the contract exceeding $2 per gallon:• Jim Thorpe Area School District, $52 per day per bus.• Lehighton Area School District, George's Transportation Company, $91 per day per bus.• Lehighton Area School District, midday run, George's Transportation Company, $70 per day per bus.• Palmerton Area School District, Leon George II School Buses, $226 per day per bus.• Panther Valley School District, $96 per day per bus.• Weatherly Area School District, $140 per day per bus.
