Bicyclist injured in Monroe crash

A 52-year-old woman sustained “suspected major injuries” when a bicycle she was operating was involved in a crash at 1:52

p.m.Friday in the area of Old Route 115, south of Mountain Road, in Ross Township, according to state police at the Lehighton barracks.Police said she was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, East Stroudsburg, by West End Ambulance.Police said the crash occurred when a 2004 Toyota Tacoma operated by a 31-year-old man from Ashley, was traveling northbound on Old Route 115 at a high rate of speed and attempted to slow down as it approached a witness, who was stopped in the northbound lane with the vehicle’s turn signal activated and attempting to turn west onto Mountain Road. Police said the Tacoma traveled into the southbound lane to avoid the stopped vehicle, crossing the double yellow line and passing the witness on the left.Meanwhile, a 2012 Hyundai Accent operated by a 19-year-old man from New Windsor, New York, which was traveling southbound in the south lane, attempted to move to the shoulder of the southbound lane while the bicyclist, who was traveling south also, was on the southbound lane’s shoulder.Police said the Tacoma struck the Accent on the driver’s side, causing the latter to travel onto the shoulder and strike the rear tire of the bicycle, throwing the woman onto the hood of the Accent and into its windshield. She came to rest on the west side of the southbound lane.Police said the 19-year-old transported himself to the hospital for suspected minor injuries.
